Microsoft's Windows operating system has a broad userbase but users seemingly prefer older versions like Windows 95 or Windows 10 because of their seamless user experience coupled with decent design elements. As you may know, Windows 10 is slated to hit its end of support in less than one year on October 14, 2025. The move has brewed a cocktail of emotions among users who are seemingly hell-bent on sticking to the OS despite its imminent death.

Recently, Windows 11's market share has been on an upward trajectory, indicating users are upgrading to Microsoft's latest OS for continued support and security updates. It remains unseen whether every user will upgrade to Windows 11 or switch to Linux or macOS.

Recently, a TechTuber MetraByte boldly attempted to get Windows 95 to run on the Nintendo 3DS with the aim of trying to make music. For context, the tech enthusiast used the newer version of the Nintendo 3DS which features additional RAM (256MB of RAM) and processing power (via Tom's Hardware).

Perhaps more interestingly, MetraByte leveraged the DOS tool (designed to help users run classic MS-DOS games) to boot Windows 95 on the Nintendo 3DS. And while he managed to get the operating system to run on the classic handheld, it was no walk in the park. This is especially true when he attempted to launch DOSBox and navigating through the command-line interface with a touchscreen and stylus.

The tech enthusiast attempted to install Windows 95 in the Nintendo 3DS several times, with each attempt taking up to 30 minutes. He finally managed to install the operating system in the classic handheld, it took over two hours. The process was characterized by the all-too-common Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), including multiple driver errors and a blue-and-gray interface.

MetraByte also indicated that he encountered issues when trying to run applications like the 3D Maze screensaver and Paint on the device. The operating system took what might have seemed like eons to load each color palette on the Paint app. The performance setback can be attributed to the DOSBox's reliance on the system memory and x86 emulation on the new Nintendo 3DS.

While MetraByte's experiment nostalgically proves Windows 95 can run on the Nintendo 3DS, the setup is far from ideal, which prompted him to give up on his plan to make music using the device while running Windows 95. Mostly because of poor performance coupled with Blue Screen of Death errors.

• Microsoft's Copilot Studio will soon support creating autonomous agents if you're part of the company's public preview.
• Copilot agents are AI-powered tools that can help with a wide range of tasks and processes.
• Agents can respond to specific triggers autonomously or respond to prompts.
• Microsoft also introduced ten new autonomous agents in Dynamics 365 designed to help sales, service, finance, and supply chain teams.

Microsoft announced that the ability to create custom Copilot agents will enter public preview at Microsoft Ignite, which starts on November 19, 2024. Copilot agents are a step toward the future seen in films and television in which you can ask AI to take care of something for you. Agents can work either autonomously or respond to prompts to aid organizations and workers. Since it's possible to create custom Copilot agents, their capabilities will expand over time, but they can already help with tasks such as lead generation, processing orders, onboarding staff, assisting in sales, and automating a supply chain.

Copilot agents can get context from data in Microsoft 365 Graph, systems of record, and Dataverse and Fabric.

What is a Copilot agent?

Copilot agents are AI assistants that can be created to help with certain tasks. The agents can help departments such as IT, marketing, sales, customer service, and finance, according to Microsoft. The tech giant also sees value in the tools for travel, retail, and financial services.

Microsoft envisions a future in which organizations have a range of AI-powered agents acting autonomously or responding to prompts. Microsoft explains that you can think of Copilot agents " as the new apps for an AI-powered world."

Agents made with Copilot Studio run the "latest models," according to Microsoft. Most notably, OpenAI o1 powers some of the agents at the moment, though that is in limited private preview.

Copilot agents entered private preview recently and will enter public preview next month. Microsoft shared quotes from several companies that have used custom agents to showcase how the tool can help organizations.

“We’re using AI to do the time-consuming work so they can use their resource and expertise to make decisions quickly based on the data available,” said Pets at Home CIO William Hewish. “It’s truly helped us empower colleagues through both the level of information at their fingertips, and in time spent on more nuanced and insightful work. The agents solution allows the profit protection team to more effectively assess cases for potential profit loss and dedicate more of their time to skilled analysis, rather than simply information gathering.”

McKinsey & Company built a Copilot agent to help with reviewing client proposals and has seen early success. "We see tremendous potential for agents to help our clients rewire the way their businesses operate," said Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company Rodney Zemmel.

Salesforce CEO drama

Recently, Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff called out Copilot, dubbing the new AI tool the "new Microsoft Clippy." The executive claimed that Copilot does not deliver value to customers and predicted the tool will not be around for long.

"When you look at how Copilot has been sold to our customers, it's disappointing. It doesn't work," said Benioff. "It spews data all over our floors, it doesn't deliver value. I haven't found a customer who has transformational work with Copilot. Copilot is just the new Microsoft Clippy."

Benioff believes that "Salesforce can beat Microsoft in AI." At least part of the CEO's confidence is due to Agentforce, a new tool from Salesforce that helps build customized AI agents. Agentforce can handle "a couple of trillion AI transactions per week," and Benioff has been effusive in his praise of the tool.

"This must be witchcraft, this is crazy with what's happening with my customers right now," said the Salesforce CEO.

Both Salesforce and Microsoft are working on tools for building custom AI agents, but it's early days for Agentforce and Copilot agents. Now that Microsoft's offering is in public preview, we'll be able to get a better gauge of how it stacks up against Agentforce.

Autonomous agents in Dynamics 365

Microsoft also introduced ten new autonomous agents in Dynamics 365 to help sales, service, finance, and supply chain teams. Microsoft highlights that the agents available in Dynamics 365 follow the tech giant's security, privacy, and AI responsibility standards and shared a few examples of agents now available in Dynamics 365:

• Sales Qualification Agent: In a profession where time literally equals money, this agent enables sellers to focus their time on the highest priority sales opportunities while the agent Classified as Microsoft Confidential researches leads, helps prioritize opportunities and guides customer outreach with personalized emails and responses.
• Supplier Communications Agent: This agent enables customers to optimize their supply chain and minimize costly disruptions by autonomously tracking supplier performance, detecting delays and responding accordingly — freeing procurement teams from time consuming manual monitoring and firefighting.
• Customer Intent and Customer Knowledge Management Agents: A business gets one chance to make a first impression, and these two agents are game changers for customer care teams facing high call volumes, talent shortages and heightened customer expectations. These agents work hand in hand with a customer service representative by learning how to resolve customer issues and autonomously adding knowledge-based articles to scale best practices across the care team.

Microsoft will talk about custom AI agents at its Ignite conference, which runs from November 19-22. Tickets for attending Ignite in person are sold out, but you can also attend the event online. There, the tech giant will also showcase the tools in action and highlight how they help organizations.

• OpenAI recently announced that it has started testing an early version of its ChatGPT desktop app on Windows.
• The Windows desktop app is currently limited to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu users, meaning you'll need a $20 monthly subscription to access the tool.
• The app works on Windows 10, but its capabilities are fairly limited. It doesn't support the Advanced Voice Mode feature and OpenAI's GPT Store.

Earlier this year, OpenAI oddly shipped its flagship AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, exclusively to Apple's macOS. The move was received with mixed emotions, considering Microsoft's multi-billion dollar investment and integration of the AI firm's technology across the tech giant's tech stack, including Windows 11.

While addressing the concerns in an interview, former OpenAI Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati indicated “We’re just prioritizing where our users are” when asked why there isn't a Windows version of ChatGPT. However, the firm highlighted its plans to ship ChatGPT to Windows later this year but didn't specify the timeframe.

Five months after shipping ChatGPT exclusively to macOS, OpenAI is finally delivering on its promise (via TechCrunch). Making the announcement late this week on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI has officially begun testing an early version of the Windows desktop app.

However, the new Windows experience is limited to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu users. You'll need a $20 subscription to any of the plans highlighted above to access the tool. Again, OpenAI plans to ship the full experience to all ChatGPT users later this year.

According to OpenAI:

“With the official ChatGPT desktop app, you can chat about files and photos. This app brings you the newest model improvements from OpenAI, including access to OpenAI o1-preview, our newest and smartest model.”

Will ChatGPT work in Windows 10?

OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app will work in Windows 10 though there'll be several critical compromises. For instance, it doesn't support the Advanced Voice Mode feature and OpenAI’s GPT Store. It's unclear if these features will eventually gain support.

As you may know, Microsoft is slated to cut support for Windows 10 in under one year on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to dominate the worldwide desktop operating market share with a whopping 62.79%, though its successor (Windows 11) has shown steady growth from September's 23.64% to the current 33.37%.

Microsoft has been trying to get users to upgrade to its latest AI-powered operating system, including an aggressive campaign featuring multi-page popup ads.

• Windows 11 Build 27729 allows you to configure the Copilot key to launch other applications.
• That build is in testing among Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel.
• Apps need to be MSIX packaged and signed to be opened with the Copilot key due to security requirements.

Windows 11 will soon support setting the Copilot key to open a different application. The change will be welcomed by many who view Copilot as either an unnecessary app or that prefer to bring up the tool with a different keyboard shortcut. The change is in testing in Windows 11 Build 27729, which is now available to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel.

If all this sounds familiar, it's because Microsoft started testing the option with Dev and Beta Channel Insiders last month. Now, the option is available to those in the Canary Channel as well.

All Copilot+ PCs feature a Copilot key, as do many newer keyboards. At the moment, that key is not customizable, making it a waste to those who do not use Copilot. The Salesforce CEO is a likely candidate to remap the Copilot key to another app, since he said that "Copilot is just the new Microsoft Clippy. It doesn't work or deliver value."

Assuming all goes well in testing, the ability to customize the Copilot key will make its way to everyone in the near future. When it does, swapping the Copilot key to open your app of choice will be possible through the Windows 11 Settings app.

There are some limits on the apps that you can open with the Copilot key. Microsoft restricted the feature to MSIX packaged and signed apps to ensure customer security and privacy.

While it doesn't affect the functionality of the Copilot key, it's fun to note that Microsoft did not invent a new key for Copilot. Instead, the teach giant programmed the Copilot key to use the key combination of Left Shift + Windows key + F23 to open Copilot. That combination of keys is unlikely to be bound to a different shortcut because very few computers have an F23 key.

Windows 11 Build 27729: Changes and Improvements

  We are adding the ability to configure the Copilot key. You can choose to have the Copilot key launch an app that is MSIX packaged and signed, thus indicating the app meets security and privacy requirements to keep customers safe. The key will continue to launch Copilot on devices that have the Copilot app installed until a customer selects a different experience. This setting can be found via Settings > Personalization > Text input. If the keyboard connected to your PC does not have a Copilot key, adjusting this setting will not do anything. We are planning further refinements to this experience in a future flight.

Windows 11 Build 27729: Fixes

• General
  We fixed an underlying issue causing some games, including Microsoft Solitaire & Casual Games, to crash on launch after installing Build 27718+.
• Windowing
  Fixed an underlying issue which could cause the screen to go black for a few seconds for some people when using ALT + Tab.
• Other
  We fixed an issue causing BitLocker to not work correctly for a small number of Insiders in the last 2 flights.

• Microsoft and Be My Eyes are building on their partnership by collaborating to make AI models more inclusive of disability.
• Be My Eyes will provide Microsoft with video datasets to close the accuracy gap in AI models on disability.
• The company promises to maintain users' privacy by omitting personal details from the videos shared with Microsoft. 

Be My Eyes announced it's working with Microsoft "to make AI models more inclusive for the over 340 million people around the world who are blind or have low vision." For context, Be My Eyes is a mobile app that helps connect users with vision impairments to sighted assistants for visual interpretations.

According to the company, integrating AI into the app will make it more effective and efficient:

"Publicly available datasets used to train AI models often lack accessibility context and can fail to reflect the lived experience of people who are blind or have low vision. This disability data desert risks an AI-prevalent future of inherent bias and inaccessibility that repeats the mistakes made during the evolution of the internet, but with the potential impact being even more significant."

The company further indicated that disability, specifically in the blind and low-vision community, is seemingly left out of the development of AI models. Consequently, AI models struggle to handle disability-related tasks.

The AI revolution will be "more inclusive"

As you may know, training is crucial to the efficiency and effectiveness of an AI model. However, "disability is often underrepresented or incorrectly categorized in datasets used to train AI." This ultimately limits the utility of the AI models coupled with instances of bias. 

Now, Be My Eyes has indicated that it'll provide Microsoft with unique video datasets to promote effective training of AI models on disability. The videos will include challenges facing visually impaired people. The videos could potentially help bridge the "accuracy gap" limiting the usefulness of AI models to the blind and low-vision community.

Privacy and security continue to raise concerns as generative AI becomes more prevalent. Be My Eyes' first-of-its-kind collaboration with Microsoft promises to maintain privacy in its new efforts by scrapping all personal data from the video metadata, including all user, account, and Personal Identifiable Information (PII) before sharing the content with the tech giant. Likewise, users can opt out of Be My Eyes' new campaign, preventing their personal information and data from being shared. 

According to Be My Eyes:

"The video datasets represent the lived experience of the blind and low vision community and will be used to improve the accuracy and precision of scene understanding and descriptions, with the goal of increasing the utility of AI for the blind and low-vision community."

Towards the end of 2023, Microsoft announced its partnership with Be My Eyes to make its Disability Answer Desk customer service department more accessible to visually impaired users. The app features an AI-powered tool dubbed Be My AI powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 model, which provides users with a vivid description of an image.

The Microsoft Store on Windows 11 has a new look in the works that will provide an "immersive experience" at the top of listings. Starting with version 22409 of the Microsoft Store, users will see trailers or hero images for apps or games. The new look is available in both light and dark mode. Right now, the experience is limited to Insiders, but Microsoft promises that "it will also start rolling out to non-Insiders soon." The update that added the improved Microsoft Store pages started shipping this week. Microsoft did not share when the improvements will roll out to non-Insiders.

"We’re introducing a new feature for product pages that adds an immersive experience to the top of the page. For apps and games that provide a trailer, you’ll be able to enjoy it as you navigate to their various pages," explained Microsoft. "Meanwhile, products without trailers will use beautiful hero images provided by the developers. There’s also an option in the Store settings page to toggle video autoplay on or off."

Fixing the Microsoft Store on Windows 11

The Microsoft Store has received a lot of hate over the years, much of which was justified. The store shipped with a lackluster app selection, poor developer support, and struggled to convert people to thinking of the Microsoft Store as the default way to install and update applications.

The gaming experience through the Microsoft Store was even worse than the app experience at launch. Our Managing Editor Jez Corden said "the Windows 10 Store is an awful experience for core gamers, and it needs to change." That was back in 2018 and during the days of Windows 10. Microsoft has made several improvements since then for both apps and games.

The Microsoft Store is much faster than it used to be. It's also more reliable when it comes to downloading and updating content. Most importantly, the Microsoft Store is now full of apps and games. In contrast to the early days of the Microsoft Store that centered around third-party apps for many big-name services, you can now find official apps for popular programs. Microsoft has made it much easier to get apps into the store and pushed the Microsoft Store heavily for years, and it's paid off.

Honestly, it's a shame that many now ignore the Microsoft Store. The store earned a poor reputation in its early days, and I know many people who have never given in a second chance. But Windows 11 is used by hundreds of millions of people, so I'm sure there's a fair number who will use and appreciate the updated Microsoft Store.

• Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently posted a blog post highlighting his thoughts on the trajectory of generative AI, including the alleviation of poverty and expedited medical breakthroughs from 100 years to a mere decade.
• The CEO outlines the vast resources required to bring his vision to fruition, including billions of dollars for computing power and trillions for building data centers.
• Anthropic is reportedly seeking to push its market valuation to $40 billion through a fresh funding round. 

As we get deeper into the tunnel on board the AI train, it's becoming more apparent that it's an extremely expensive venture. For context, OpenAI spends up to $700,000 per day to keep ChatGPT running, which doesn't include the ridiculous amount of money spent on AI model training and staffing. Perhaps this could be one of the reasons why OpenAI is rumored to potentially hike the subscription fee for its next-gen AI models to $2000 per month.

Consequently, the ChatGPT has recently found itself between a rock and a hard place as it burns through wads of cash financing its sophisticated AI advances. More interestingly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared an "absurd plan" that would require "$7 trillion and many years to build 36 semiconductor plants and additional data centers" to fulfill. And while an OpenAI spokesman refuted the claims by stating that the firm wasn't exploring multi-trillion-dollar projects, it goes to show how expensive AI advances are.

Like Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei shares similar aspirations for artificial general intelligence (AGI), which he recently shared in his Machines of Loving Grace blog post. Per Amodei's speculations, AGI could expedite medical breakthroughs from 100 years to a decade, leading to major leaps in the effective treatment of illnesses like PTSD and depression. 

And while it all looks promising on paper, there's a lot that needs to be done, including getting investors on board and raising hundreds of billions to train AGI models. Amodei claims AGI might be a fireproof way to alleviate world poverty. Aside from the hundreds of billions required for training, the CEO indicates that there will also be a dire need for trillions of dollars worth of data centers to make this dream come to a reality.

As you may know, generative AI's demand for electricity to power its advances and cooling water is at an all-time high. For context, Microsoft and Google consume more power than 100 countries. Similarly, OpenAI's GPT-3 model consumes four times more water than previously thought for cooling. 

According to Anthropic's CEO:

“Of course no one can know the future with any certainty or precision, and the effects of powerful AI are likely to be even more unpredictable than past technological changes, so all of this is unavoidably going to consist of guesses.”

This news comes after OpenAI's Sam Altman claimed superintelligence might be "a few thousand days away." Anthropic is reportedly trying to raise money for its AI advances through a funding round that could push its market cap well beyond $40 billion. Amodei also indicated that he wasn't shy about highlighting the risks AI poses to humanity.

“I don’t know if this world is realistic, and even if it is, it will not be achieved without a huge amount of effort and struggle by many brave and dedicated people,” he added. “Everyone (including AI companies!) will need to do their part both to prevent risks and to fully realize the benefits.”

Sophisticated AI advances cost a ton

Over the past few years, more people and organizations have begun to embrace and integrate generative AI into their workflows to promote efficiency and effectiveness across medicine, education, computing, entertainment, and more. In return, the technology has rapidly progressed but there are critical issues abound. 

OpenAI was reportedly on the verge of bankruptcy, with projections of making a $5 billion loss within the next 12 months. However, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and other key investors, including Thrive Capital, participated in the ChatGPT maker's latest round of funding, raising $6.6 billion to extend its lifeline, pushing its market valuation to $157 billion.

Interestingly, a recent report suggested that OpenAI will possibly burn through $44 billion before it makes a profit in 2029. The report attributed its prediction to OpenAI's complicated multi-billion dollar partnership with Microsoft. At the same time, investors have started raising concerns over Microsoft's spending on AI projects as it struggles to establish profitability in the relatively new landscape. 

Market analysts and experts predict investors will run out of patience and opt to channel their money elsewhere rather than "throwing it away" in the volatile AI landscape. They further speculate that this might prompt Microsoft to buy OpenAI within the next three years.

As a blatant attempt to avoid hostile takeovers and outsider interference, the ChatGPT maker is exploring a public benefit structure that could potentially hurt its founding mission. Pressure continues to mount on OpenAI as it could reportedly be mandated to return the money raised by investors in its latest funding round if it can't turn into a for-profit venture within the next two years.

Reports of x86's death may be "severely exaggerated," according to Intel's CEO, but Arm computing continues to put pressure on its rivals. The first wave of AI PCs is full of laptops running Arm chips, and any Windows on Arm device just got a big boost. Thanks to several developers optimizing their apps for Windows 11 on Arm, PCs with Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus processors now have a larger library of applications that can take advantage of Qualcomm's latest chips.

Many of the best AI PCs and best Copilot+ PCs run on Arm chips, making native Arm applications important for getting the best experience. While you can run many apps through emulation, native Arm apps will get better performance and use less power to run. After years of pushing from Microsoft and Qualcomm, developers now appear eager to optimize their apps for Arm. In just the last month, Arm-native versions of NordVPN, Arc Browser, Notion, and Foxit shipped.

"We’re proud to be among the first VPN providers to offer a chance to shield your ARM-based Windows devices from online threats," said NordVPN. "This autumn, we are releasing a NordVPN app version that supports ARM architecture on Windows."

Foxit, which is one of the best PDF editors, shared similar thoughts when announcing its native Arm application.

"We are excited to announce that we are bringing our industry-leading PDF solutions to the industry’s foremost PCs powered by Snapdragon," said Foxit Executive Vice President of Sales Andrew Travis. “Foxit’s commitment to native support on the Snapdragon platform enables us to deliver significant improvements, including faster rendering and processing of content, leading to greatly enhanced productivity and an unrivaled user experience."

The recent additions to the Windows on Arm app library build on an impressive year for Arm computing. It appears Microsoft and Qualcomm have finally built an Arm platform developers consider worth investing time into.

Windows 11 on Arm app compatibility

Microsoft, Qualcomm, and app developers have worked on getting programs to run well on Arm devices for quite a while. It's taken years to get big-name app makers on board, but we're finally at a place where many popular apps run on Arm natively. The list of the best native Windows on Arm apps includes browsers such as Chrome, popular streaming apps, productivity tools like Office, and several apps for creators. Some well-known apps, however, still have to run through emulation.

Emulation provides a bridge between x86 and Arm. In many cases, an app that has not been optimized for Windows on Arm can still run through emulation. Native Arm applications will have better performance and efficiency than emulated apps, but app emulation on Windows 11 is solid. Microsoft's Prism emulation tech improved emulation performance dramatically.

In some cases, apps cannot run through emulation at all. That's why we haven't seen many VPNs work on Windows on Arm PCs until recently. Other apps work fine through emulation, but they'll provide a better experience when running natively.

Many popular apps in 2024 are Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), making the importance of native Arm code less important (assuming you're using an Arm browser). But there are still plenty of applications that are much better when made into native Arm apps.

NordVPN, Arc browser, Foxit PDF Editor, and Notion are welcome additions to the growing library of native Arm applications, especially to those using one of the best Windows on Arm laptops.

Windows 10 is slated to hit its end-of-support date on October 14, 2025, less than one year from now. However, Microsoft's decision to forge forward with its plans seems unpopular among the vast majority of Windows users.

For context, Windows 10 dominates the market share with a staggering 62.79%. However, it's worth mentioning that Windows 11 is rapidly gaining traction as Windows 10's imminent death edges closer, prompting users to purchase newer PCs that support Windows 11.

There are varied reasons that can be attributed to users' reluctance to upgrade to Windows 11, including Microsoft's stringent system requirements and flawed design elements. Nonetheless, the shift is inevitable.

Interestingly, an industrious developer, NTDEV created Tiny11 — a lightweight version of Windows 11 designed to run on old PCs that don't meet Windows 11's strict system requirements. The program scales down Windows 11's 20GB install size to less than 4GB of RAM.

The developer's latest project is quite impressive. As you may know, Microsoft shipped its big Windows 11 2024 Update (also known as version 24H2) featuring flagship AI features, including Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions, and more. Even Microsoft's privacy and security nightmare Windows Recall might rejoin the fray soon.

Over the past few weeks, several users have taken to social media to express their concern over Windows 11’s big 2024 update taking a long time to install. The issue could potentially be attributed to the update's large size. However, Tiny11 might have a "hassle-free" alternative.

NTDEV recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Microsoft's Windows 11 2024 update works with Tiny11 ISO builder. Tiny11 scales down Windows 11, version 24H2 install size, allowing it to fit inside a DVD.

As shared on NTDEV's post on X, the developer managed to clean install Windows 11 24H2 based on Tiny11. For context, the developer managed to chop the big update's install size down to 3.54GB using LZX compression.

This is quite an impressive feat considering the standard Windows 11 would ordinarily eat up 20 to 30GB of your storage. At under 4GB, you could install the software on a DVD drive and remain with additional storage.

Tiny11 is a third-party tool that allows users to clean install Windows 11 on their devices without extra services and apps that they don't necessarily need.

It worth noting that the experience could potentially ship with its fair share of setbacks, including blue screen errors, system instability, and data loss. You also risk not getting updates from Microsoft since they are not supported on your system or even "bricking" your device.

• AI Overview is an experimental feature Google uses for its search engine that gives users a brief summary of notable search results when a query is entered.
• Since its introduction, however, AI Overview has come under intense scrutiny for showing users absurdly inaccurate and/or downright dangerous information and suggestions.
• The feature's latest snafu saw it recently erroneously list a game developer's personal phone number as the main contact for a studio he hasn't worked at for over eight years.
• As a result of the blunder, the developer received an irate phone call from a parent complaining about content in a game their child plays that he worked on, as the parent thought they were contacting the developer's office.

Google's experimental AI Overview search feature has come under fire for giving users bizarre results and suggestions that range from shockingly inaccurate to downright harmful, and its latest snafu has led to the erroneous publication of a game developer's personal phone number.

Recently, Skybound Games senior environment artist Rogelio Delgado posted a thread on X (Twitter) in which he recounted an irate phone call he received from a child's parent. The father contacted Delgado to complain about content in Conan Exiles — an M-rated, 2017 survival open world game his son plays that was made by the Dune: Awakening studio Funcom — and noted he'd found Delgado's number online because of his previous employment at Funcom over eight years ago.

After a "vaguely combative and awkward conversation," the caller eventually apologized, explaining that his assistant found the number for him and that he wasn't aware Delgado no longer worked at Funcom. Shortly afterwards, he texted Delgado a screenshot that showed Google's AI Overview listing his personal phone number as Funcom's main corporate office. And as you'd expect, Delgado was (rightfully) livid about the mishap.

"My ONLY guess on how this happened is that I have my phone number on my resume that also has me listed as a past employee of Funcom," he wrote in his social media thread. "...but how google AI made the leap that THAT was the number for the CORPERATE OFFICE LOCATED IN NORWAY… AND TELLING PEOPLE WITH ITS WHOLE CHEST. WTF. I am aghast. @GoogleAI GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER."

Commenters figured out that the AI actually pulled the number from an erroneous listing on the prospecting business platform LeadIQ, but even so, it should have drawn information from Funcom's public contact information page. Frankly, this blunder was catastrophic, and it's not a stretch to worry that seriously dangerous situations could occur if Google's AI made mistakes like it with physical home addresses or office locations.

As I said before, this is also far from the first controversy Google has brought about with its AI ventures as it works to challenge Microsoft Copilot. Earlier this year, AI Overview was fiercely criticized for pushing absurd search results that included telling people to add glue to their pizza sauce, lauding rocks as a healthy snack, and recommending suicide to depressed individuals, among others. And while some of the queries that led to these answers were likely fine-tuned to spit out social media engagement bait, several were traced to old Reddit comments — and no matter what, there should be measures in place to stop results like this from generating.

All of these debacles illustrate the importance of curated, high-quality sources and information for AI language models, filters that ensure dangerous or grossly inaccurate information isn't shared with users, and failures on Google's end to adequately integrate both into its search assistant. If AI is here to stay, I hope issues like these don't continue happening for long. I can't exactly say I'm confident they won't, though positive experiences with other models like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot despite my best efforts to trick them do make me hopeful.

Despite the gravity of the AI error here, it did at least lead to a pretty funny comment from Funcom chief creative officer and Dune: Awakening creative director Joel Bylos: "On the other hand, thanks for taking the heat for me man :)." There's always a silver lining.
