Salesforce CEO says "Copilot is just the new Microsoft Clippy"

Microsoft has several Copilots available to general users and in the enterprise space, but a major tech CEO believes Copilot is the new Microsoft Clippy. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff claimed that "Salesforce can beat Microsoft in AI" in a recent podcast.

"When you look at how Copilot has been sold to our customers, it's disappointing. It doesn't work," said Benioff. "It spews data all over our floors, it doesn't deliver value. I haven't found a customer who has transformational work with Copilot. Copilot is just the new Microsoft Clippy."

Of course, the CEO of Salesforce is far from unbiased on the topic. Salesforce's Agentforce competes in the same space as Microsoft's AI offering. Specifically, the tool helps create custom AI agents.

It's fairly common to see CEOs promote their own products or downplay the competition, though Benioff was a bit more direct than some CEOs. We'll have to see if the Salesforce CEO's prediction about Copilot not being around for long comes true.

"Elon Musk is Superhuman," says NVIDIA CEO

If I told you a tech CEO said Elon Musk is superhuman, you would likely assume Musk said the praise about himself. But in a recent interview it was NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang lauding Musk's AI efforts.

"As far as I know, there's only one person in the world who could do that; Elon is singular in his understanding of engineering and construction and large systems and marshaling resources; it's just unbelievable."

Huang's praise of Musk focused on the xAI team setting up a powerful supercomputer in 19 days. NVIDIA's CEO said the process would normally take years, not weeks. He went on emphasize that the networking, wiring, and engineering required to create a supercluster featuring 100,000 H200 Blackwell GPUs is massive.

Usually, I remind folks on the internet that praising Musk will not make the celebrity offer a job, but that advice doesn't apply here. NVIDIA works closely with Musk, including collaborating with the xAI team across engineering, networking, infrastructure, and software. It's safe to say stroking Musk's ego is a sound strategy for NVIDIA's CEO.

Qualcomm cancels Snapdragon X Elite Dev Kit

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite Dev Kit was supposed to be in the hands of consumers and reviewers this week, but the chipmaker canceled the device instead. While a small handful of people were lucky enough to get a Snapdragon X Elite Dev Kit, the vast majority of those who ordered the mini PC will not receive a unit.

Qualcomm emailed customers this week, clarifying that the Snapdragon X Elite Dev Kit did not meet its "usual standards of excellence." As a result, Qualcomm canceled the product and will issue refunds to anyone that purchased one of the devices.

Anyone who placed an order will receive a refund, including anyone who already received a Snapdragon X Elite Dev Kit. The dev kit was supposed to ship in June, but it faced delays. Ultimately, the PC did not ship at all.

The Snapdragon X Elite Dev Kit faced many challenges, including the removal of an HDMI port at the last minute and Qualcomm failing to pass FCC regulation before shipping units.

While there are other Snapdragon X Elite-powered PCs available, Qualcomm's dev kit was the only device set to run on the top-end X Elite SoC (the X1E-00-1DE) with a higher 4.3GHz boost frequency.

Microsoft shadow drops two Xbox games

While the majority of the announcements from Microsoft's October Xbox Partner Preview event focused on upcoming games, Microsoft snuck out some titles during the event. Blindfire and Animal Well are now available to play on Xbox Series X|S, though the former is in early access.

Blindfire is a PvP shooter with a unique gameplay mechanic that has defeated players able control cameras and traps in the arena. Those defeated players can exact revenge on those that slayed them, aid certain players, or help a specific team (Blindfire has both solo and team modes).

Animal Well launched earlier this year on PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. It's now available on Xbox Series X|S, giving those in the Xbox ecosystem a way to play the Metroidvania platformer.

• OpenAI recently announced that it has started testing an early version of its ChatGPT desktop app on Windows.
• The Windows desktop app is currently limited to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu users, meaning you'll need a $20 monthly subscription to access the tool.
• The app works on Windows 10, but its capabilities are fairly limited. It doesn't support the Advanced Voice Mode feature and OpenAI's GPT Store.

Earlier this year, OpenAI oddly shipped its flagship AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, exclusively to Apple's macOS. The move was received with mixed emotions, considering Microsoft's multi-billion dollar investment and integration of the AI firm's technology across the tech giant's tech stack, including Windows 11.

While addressing the concerns in an interview, former OpenAI Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati indicated “We’re just prioritizing where our users are” when asked why there isn't a Windows version of ChatGPT. However, the firm highlighted its plans to ship ChatGPT to Windows later this year but didn't specify the timeframe.

Five months after shipping ChatGPT exclusively to macOS, OpenAI is finally delivering on its promise (via TechCrunch). Making the announcement late this week on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI has officially begun testing an early version of the Windows desktop app.

However, the new Windows experience is limited to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu users. You'll need a $20 subscription to any of the plans highlighted above to access the tool. Again, OpenAI plans to ship the full experience to all ChatGPT users later this year.

According to OpenAI:

“With the official ChatGPT desktop app, you can chat about files and photos. This app brings you the newest model improvements from OpenAI, including access to OpenAI o1-preview, our newest and smartest model.”

Will ChatGPT work in Windows 10?

OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app will work in Windows 10 though there'll be several critical compromises. For instance, it doesn't support the Advanced Voice Mode feature and OpenAI’s GPT Store. It's unclear if these features will eventually gain support.

As you may know, Microsoft is slated to cut support for Windows 10 in under one year on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to dominate the worldwide desktop operating market share with a whopping 62.79%, though its successor (Windows 11) has shown steady growth from September's 23.64% to the current 33.37%.

Microsoft has been trying to get users to upgrade to its latest AI-powered operating system, including an aggressive campaign featuring multi-page popup ads.

Windows 11 will soon support setting the Copilot key to open a different application. The change will be welcomed by many who view Copilot as either an unnecessary app or that prefer to bring up the tool with a different keyboard shortcut. The change is in testing in Windows 11 Build 27729, which is now available to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel.

If all this sounds familiar, it's because Microsoft started testing the option with Dev and Beta Channel Insiders last month. Now, the option is available to those in the Canary Channel as well.

All Copilot+ PCs feature a Copilot key, as do many newer keyboards. At the moment, that key is not customizable, making it a waste to those who do not use Copilot. The Salesforce CEO is a likely candidate to remap the Copilot key to another app, since he said that "Copilot is just the new Microsoft Clippy. It doesn't work or deliver value."

Assuming all goes well in testing, the ability to customize the Copilot key will make its way to everyone in the near future. When it does, swapping the Copilot key to open your app of choice will be possible through the Windows 11 Settings app.

There are some limits on the apps that you can open with the Copilot key. Microsoft restricted the feature to MSIX packaged and signed apps to ensure customer security and privacy.

While it doesn't affect the functionality of the Copilot key, it's fun to note that Microsoft did not invent a new key for Copilot. Instead, the teach giant programmed the Copilot key to use the key combination of Left Shift + Windows key + F23 to open Copilot. That combination of keys is unlikely to be bound to a different shortcut because very few computers have an F23 key.

Windows 11 Build 27729: Changes and Improvements

  We are adding the ability to configure the Copilot key. You can choose to have the Copilot key launch an app that is MSIX packaged and signed, thus indicating the app meets security and privacy requirements to keep customers safe. The key will continue to launch Copilot on devices that have the Copilot app installed until a customer selects a different experience. This setting can be found via Settings > Personalization > Text input. If the keyboard connected to your PC does not have a Copilot key, adjusting this setting will not do anything. We are planning further refinements to this experience in a future flight.

The Microsoft Store on Windows 11 has a new look in the works that will provide an "immersive experience" at the top of listings. Starting with version 22409 of the Microsoft Store, users will see trailers or hero images for apps or games. The new look is available in both light and dark mode. Right now, the experience is limited to Insiders, but Microsoft promises that "it will also start rolling out to non-Insiders soon." The update that added the improved Microsoft Store pages started shipping this week. Microsoft did not share when the improvements will roll out to non-Insiders.

"We’re introducing a new feature for product pages that adds an immersive experience to the top of the page. For apps and games that provide a trailer, you’ll be able to enjoy it as you navigate to their various pages," explained Microsoft. "Meanwhile, products without trailers will use beautiful hero images provided by the developers. There’s also an option in the Store settings page to toggle video autoplay on or off."

Fixing the Microsoft Store on Windows 11

The Microsoft Store has received a lot of hate over the years, much of which was justified. The store shipped with a lackluster app selection, poor developer support, and struggled to convert people to thinking of the Microsoft Store as the default way to install and update applications.

The gaming experience through the Microsoft Store was even worse than the app experience at launch. Our Managing Editor Jez Corden said "the Windows 10 Store is an awful experience for core gamers, and it needs to change." That was back in 2018 and during the days of Windows 10. Microsoft has made several improvements since then for both apps and games.

The Microsoft Store is much faster than it used to be. It's also more reliable when it comes to downloading and updating content. Most importantly, the Microsoft Store is now full of apps and games. In contrast to the early days of the Microsoft Store that centered around third-party apps for many big-name services, you can now find official apps for popular programs. Microsoft has made it much easier to get apps into the store and pushed the Microsoft Store heavily for years, and it's paid off.

Honestly, it's a shame that many now ignore the Microsoft Store. The store earned a poor reputation in its early days, and I know many people who have never given in a second chance. But Windows 11 is used by hundreds of millions of people, so I'm sure there's a fair number who will use and appreciate the updated Microsoft Store.

Reports of x86's death may be "severely exaggerated," according to Intel's CEO, but Arm computing continues to put pressure on its rivals. The first wave of AI PCs is full of laptops running Arm chips, and any Windows on Arm device just got a big boost. Thanks to several developers optimizing their apps for Windows 11 on Arm, PCs with Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus processors now have a larger library of applications that can take advantage of Qualcomm's latest chips.

Many of the best AI PCs and best Copilot+ PCs run on Arm chips, making native Arm applications important for getting the best experience. While you can run many apps through emulation, native Arm apps will get better performance and use less power to run. After years of pushing from Microsoft and Qualcomm, developers now appear eager to optimize their apps for Arm. In just the last month, Arm-native versions of NordVPN, Arc Browser, Notion, and Foxit shipped.

"We’re proud to be among the first VPN providers to offer a chance to shield your ARM-based Windows devices from online threats," said NordVPN. "This autumn, we are releasing a NordVPN app version that supports ARM architecture on Windows."

Foxit, which is one of the best PDF editors, shared similar thoughts when announcing its native Arm application.

"We are excited to announce that we are bringing our industry-leading PDF solutions to the industry’s foremost PCs powered by Snapdragon," said Foxit Executive Vice President of Sales Andrew Travis. “Foxit’s commitment to native support on the Snapdragon platform enables us to deliver significant improvements, including faster rendering and processing of content, leading to greatly enhanced productivity and an unrivaled user experience."

The recent additions to the Windows on Arm app library build on an impressive year for Arm computing. It appears Microsoft and Qualcomm have finally built an Arm platform developers consider worth investing time into.

Windows 11 on Arm app compatibility

Microsoft, Qualcomm, and app developers have worked on getting programs to run well on Arm devices for quite a while. It's taken years to get big-name app makers on board, but we're finally at a place where many popular apps run on Arm natively. The list of the best native Windows on Arm apps includes browsers such as Chrome, popular streaming apps, productivity tools like Office, and several apps for creators. Some well-known apps, however, still have to run through emulation.

Emulation provides a bridge between x86 and Arm. In many cases, an app that has not been optimized for Windows on Arm can still run through emulation. Native Arm applications will have better performance and efficiency than emulated apps, but app emulation on Windows 11 is solid. Microsoft's Prism emulation tech improved emulation performance dramatically.

In some cases, apps cannot run through emulation at all. That's why we haven't seen many VPNs work on Windows on Arm PCs until recently. Other apps work fine through emulation, but they'll provide a better experience when running natively.

Many popular apps in 2024 are Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), making the importance of native Arm code less important (assuming you're using an Arm browser). But there are still plenty of applications that are much better when made into native Arm apps.

NordVPN, Arc browser, Foxit PDF Editor, and Notion are welcome additions to the growing library of native Arm applications, especially to those using one of the best Windows on Arm laptops.

Windows 10 is slated to hit its end-of-support date on October 14, 2025, less than one year from now. However, Microsoft's decision to forge forward with its plans seems unpopular among the vast majority of Windows users.

For context, Windows 10 dominates the market share with a staggering 62.79%. However, it's worth mentioning that Windows 11 is rapidly gaining traction as Windows 10's imminent death edges closer, prompting users to purchase newer PCs that support Windows 11.

There are varied reasons that can be attributed to users' reluctance to upgrade to Windows 11, including Microsoft's stringent system requirements and flawed design elements. Nonetheless, the shift is inevitable.

Interestingly, an industrious developer, NTDEV created Tiny11 — a lightweight version of Windows 11 designed to run on old PCs that don't meet Windows 11's strict system requirements. The program scales down Windows 11's 20GB install size to less than 4GB of RAM.

The developer's latest project is quite impressive. As you may know, Microsoft shipped its big Windows 11 2024 Update (also known as version 24H2) featuring flagship AI features, including Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions, and more. Even Microsoft's privacy and security nightmare Windows Recall might rejoin the fray soon.

Over the past few weeks, several users have taken to social media to express their concern over Windows 11’s big 2024 update taking a long time to install. The issue could potentially be attributed to the update's large size. However, Tiny11 might have a "hassle-free" alternative.

NTDEV recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that Microsoft's Windows 11 2024 update works with Tiny11 ISO builder. Tiny11 scales down Windows 11, version 24H2 install size, allowing it to fit inside a DVD.

As shared on NTDEV's post on X, the developer managed to clean install Windows 11 24H2 based on Tiny11. For context, the developer managed to chop the big update's install size down to 3.54GB using LZX compression.

This is quite an impressive feat considering the standard Windows 11 would ordinarily eat up 20 to 30GB of your storage. At under 4GB, you could install the software on a DVD drive and remain with additional storage.

Tiny11 is a third-party tool that allows users to clean install Windows 11 on their devices without extra services and apps that they don't necessarily need.

It worth noting that the experience could potentially ship with its fair share of setbacks, including blue screen errors, system instability, and data loss. You also risk not getting updates from Microsoft since they are not supported on your system or even "bricking" your device.

5. Click the Reset button.

After you complete the steps, the system will reset the application, deleting its data but not your pictures.

How to reinstall Photos app on Windows

To reinstall the Photos app, use these steps:

4. Click the menu button for the Photos app and click the Uninstall option.

According to a recent report by IDC, the growing shipment of AI PCs isn't driven by the AI capabilities in these devices but by the consumer's dire need to upgrade to Windows 11 and purchase future-proof devices.

Windows 11 users had a bit of a shock last week after upgrading PCs to the Windows 11 2024 Update (Windows 11 version 24H2). Following the installation of the latest major update to Windows, some systems showed 8.63GB of files that could not be deleted. Running the Windows Disk Cleanup application left the files untouched, or so it seemed. Now, we have confirmation from Microsoft that an issue can cause Windows 11 to show an incorrect amount of storage space that can be freed.

"After using the Windows Disk Cleanup application, it may display an incorrect amount of disk space that can be freed up in the 'Windows Update Cleanup' category," states a Microsoft support page.

"Please note this is a reporting error. When 'Windows Update Cleanup' is selected and Disk Cleanup is run for the first time, some or all files in that category (for example, 15 GB) are cleaned up correctly and the related disk space is freed as expected. However, after this initial run, the tool may inaccurately report an amount of space still available for cleanup (for example, 88 GB) in the 'Windows Update Cleanup' category. This inaccurate amount of disk space is reported even though the space was already freed in the initial run."

What's next for the Windows 11 storage issue?

Now that Microsoft has confirmed the issue causing the Windows 11 storage bug, the tech giant will get to work on a solution. Microsoft promises more information when a resolution is available. How long that process will take can vary, since some fixes roll out quickly while others require more time to fine tune.

Windows 11 version 24H2 has several known issues. Microsoft lists all of them on a support page:
